GOULD, John (1804-1881). A Monograph of the Trochilidae or family of Humming-Birds. London: printed by Taylor and Francis, published by the Author, [1849]-1861.
5 volumes, large 2° (547 x 373mm.). 360 fine hand-coloured lithographic plates by and after Gould, H. C. Richter, and W. Hart, many highlighted with gold, overpainted with transparent oil colours and varnish. (Some spotting, affecting the verso of about 41 plates, very light in most cases but heavier to plate numbers 1, 2, 16, 40 and 302.) Contemporary green morocco gilt, g.e., by H. Stamper.
A FINE COPY OF GOULD'S MASTERPIECE but without the supplement of 58 plates published by Henry Sotheran and completed in 1887 after Gould's death. Most of the subjects came from Gould's own collection of Humming-bird specimens, a number of which he exhibited at the Regent's Park Zoological Gardens during the Great Exhibition of 1851. The plates gave Gould the chance to display his new technique of imitating the birds' irridescent plumage by the use of brilliant metallic colouring. Nissen IVB 380; Anker 177; Fine Bird Books p.78; Wood p.365; Zimmer p.258; Sauer 16. (5)
