7 volumes, 8° (250 x 160mm). Photogravure portrait of Lilford, 421 chromolithographic plates by W. Greve, Mintern Bros. and others after A. Thorburn (260), J. G. Keulemans (125), W. Foster and G. E. Lodge. (A few plates, especially in vol. VII, with dampstains to upper margin, occasional light browning of text leaves.) Contemporary olive-green half morocco, gilt, t.e.g. (corners slightly rubbed, spines a little faded).

Second edition, issued, like the first edition, in 36 parts. Parts VII-XVII only were reprinted for the second edition: Mullens and Swann note that "various improvements were made, some of the plates . . . being much improved". The first edition was begun in October 1885, the second in 1891, when part XVIII of the first edition appeared. The second edition overtook the first with the publication of part XXVIII in September 1894, after which the same parts of both editions appeared simultaneously until the completion of the work.
