Numerous plates, mostly hand-coloured lithographs, after J.G. Keulemans, J. Wolf, J. Jennens, H. Grönvold and others by Hanhart, Mintern Brothers and others. 88 vols. in uniform red morocco gilt (except for the 4 volumes for 1921 - 1925 bound in red half morocco), g.e., the remainder in original wrappers. Provenance: Frederick DuCane Godman (armorial bookplate, pencilled notes and marginalia).
A fine run of the official organ of the British Ornithologists Union, the bound volumes from the library of one of the union's twenty founding members, and rightly described as 'THE PREMIER PUBLICATION OF ITS KIND IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE [AND] THE MOST PRACTICAL AND BEST-EDITED ORNITHOLOGICAL PERIODICAL IN ANY LANGUAGE.' (McGill/Wood p. 396). The bound run is complete to the end of the 12th series and its editors include P. L and W. L. Sclater, Alfred Newton, Osbert Salvin, H. Saunders and A. H. Evans. The three index volumes are for 1859-1876, 1877-1894 and 1895-1912, the general subject index is for 1859-1894, the supplements include the first and second revised editions of the B.O.U.'s A List of British Birds (published in 1883 and 1915 respectively), the first and second 50th-jubilee supplements (published in 1909 and 1915) and supplementary volumes issued in 1927 and 1930. The first jubilee supplement includes biographical details of the 20 founding members of the Union (including 12pp. on Frederick Godman). Nissen IVB 476; Anker 219; McGill/Wood p.396.
