MOORE, Thomas and William P. AYRES. The Gardners' Magazine of Botany, Horticulture, Floriculture, and Natural Science. London: Henry Vizetelly for William S. Orr and Co., 1850-1851.

3 volumes, 4° (260 x 185mm). Tinted lithographic title to volume I, letterpress titles, 100 hand-coloured lithographic plates of flowers, fruit and insects and 11 uncoloured of ferns by C. J. Rosenberg, numerous illustrations. (Occasional light spotting, G2-4 of volume I torn at upper margin with slight loss.) Contemporary green half morocco gilt (spines darkened, scuffed and rubbed). Provenance: Frederick DuCane Godman (armorial bookplate).

This periodical, conducted by the curator of the Botanic Garden, Chelsea, existed for only two years before a lack of subscribers forced the editors to cease publication. The magazine was aimed at the professional gardener, but, as the editors state in the preface to volume III, "the fact was to some extent overlooked that [he] . . . did not always possess the means of spending his monthly half-crown on one periodical, however high his appreciation of it might be. Experience has further shown . . . that among gardeners, the numbers who seek for Scientific Information and Technical Botany are a limited class". BMC N.H. p. 639. (3)
