PETIVER, James (d. 1718). Opera, Historiam naturalem spectantia; or, Gazophylacium. Containing several 1000 figures. London: for John Millan, [1693]-1764.

Volumes I & II only (of 3), 2° (370 x 255mm). 292 engraved plates, 14 engraved pages of text (rectos only). (Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary calf (spines worn, some scuffing). Provenance: Alfred Fryer (signature, numerous annotations); Frederick DuCane Godman (armorial bookplate).

A fascinating reissue of most of Petiver's published works, with new general titles, illustrations printed from the original plates and the original sheets of all but 12pp of letterpress text. The two volumes include at least 20 works, ranging from his Gazophylacii Naturae & Artis Decas Sexta with 156 plates of birds, butterflies, plants and other natural curiosities to the highly ephemeral single letterpress page of instructions on how to gather plants printed 'on drying paper.. probably... for private distribution to Petiver's collectors.' (Henrey III. 1215). The third 8° volume was published in 1767. Cf. Henrey 1208-1223 & 1225; Lisney pp. 45-46; Nissen BBI 1519 (with 286 plates). Sold not subject to return because of the complications in collation. (2)
