A fine set of L'ancienne France, rarely found complete. This enormous project, recording the scenery and ruins of provincial France, spanned most of Baron Taylor's life. Beraldi argues that L'ancienne France not only helped to form the early 19th-century French taste for 'gothic' art, influencing writers such as Hugo and Merimée, but also represented a major achievement in the history of lithography (Beraldi XII, 90). Indeed, the large number of artists involved, including Taylor, Bonington, Vernet, Sabatier, Isabey and even Delacroix, has led to the claim that it is among 'the greatest of all publications illustrated with lithographs' (Ray I, 165).
