Arnold Colom's extremely rare English edition of a Mediterranean pilot; this is the 'third edition', previously known only by a copy in the Royal Geographical Society. Koeman V A.Col 6. Koeman found surviving contracts that showed that Colom was commissioned in 1664 by John Tuthill, a merchant of Yarmouth, to produce the plates for an English edition of a Mediterranean pilot. The plates were apparently re-engraved from his own work and not simply copies of charts by his father, Jacob Aertsz. The agreement between Tuthill and Colom was for Colom to deliver 500 unbound 'strait-books' at 45 pennies a piece, and Colom was then obliged to take a hundred of these English copies, to be sold within 12 years at a minimum price of 6 guilders. Of the Tuthill edition Koeman records 3 copies, of the 'second edition' with Colom's over label, dated 1660 only one copy is recorded.
