BLAEU, Willem. Novus Atlas, das ist Welt-beschreibung. Amsterdam: J. and C. Blaeu, 1649-47-[48]-46.
Volumes I-IV, 2° (500 x 330mm). German text, 4 hand-coloured engraved titles, heightened in gilt, letterpress title overslips, 2 section titles, 334 maps, mostly double-page, all hand-coloured in outline, with decorative coloured cartouches and coats of arms, 7 folding, coloured illustrations in volume IV. (7 maps creased, 5 with slight offsetting, 7 with minor tears to lower centre folds, 2 affecting engraved area, small wormhole affecting lower blank margin of volume IV.) Original publishers' vellum, panelled in gilt (slightly rubbed, several ties lacking). Koeman I Bl33; Bl 34; cf. Bl 41B; Bl 47B.
A FINE SET of the first four volumes of the Theatrum probably purchased circa 1649/50. The volumes comprise volume I: Germany and the Netherlands; II: France, Spain, Africa, Asia and America; III: Italy, Greece, scotland and Ireland; IV: England and Wales. This copy of volume III varies from Koeman's collation, the title page being undated but agrees with Koeman's description in having the imprint of Johannes Blaeu alone, suggesting that it was printed after Cornelius's death in 1648. Volume III also omits the section title and the maps of Great Britain and England; these maps are both included in the fourth volume. (4)
