Lot Essay

This violin is known as the Ex-Kosman after the Dutch violinist
Elkan Kosman who acquired the instrument from the collection of
H.C. Silvestre. Kosman emigrated to the United States in about 1902, after a career in Britain, and formed a string quartet in Philadelphia with Edwin Brill, Howard Rattay and Rudolph Hennig. The violin was acquired by Max Möller & Son of Amsterdam and was subsequently sold to William Moennig & Son in Philadelphia. (op.cit)
