Lot Essay

The Printsellers' Association (1912) records an edition, declared 8 November 1894, of 350 Artist's Proofs on vellum at 10 guineas and 25 Presentation Proofs. There was no other state. A copy of this print was exhibited at Burne-Jones's memorial exhibition at the New Gallery, 1898-99, no.228.

The painting was exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1880. It was bought by Cyril Flower, Lord Battersea, and presented by Lady Battersea to the Tate Gallery in 1924.
