Edward Wilkins Waite was born into an artistic family in Leatherhead, Surry, in 1854. He was the son of a Congregationalist minister, who was an amateur watercolourist, and the grandson of the miniaturist and illustrator William Watkin Waite.
Waite exhibited extensively from 1876; not only in this country but as far afield as Cape Town, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Paris and Zurich. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1878; between then and 1919 exhibiting forty six works.
Waite became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1893. Major exhibitions of his work have been held at Gainsborough's House, Sudbury, in 1983 and at Guildford House Gallery, Guildford in 1986.
