John Ley Pethybridge was born in Launceston, Cornwall on 6 April 1865. He studied painting under John Emms, the New Forest Master of Foxhounds, and well known animal painter. He also studied in Cornwall and at Bruges. He is perhaps best known as an illustrator in particular for his work on the illustrations of the Sherlock Holmes stories for The Strand magazine.
