A PAIR OF PÂTE-SUR-PÂTE VASES of baluster square section with two grotesque animals' mask handles, painted by James Callowhill on duck-egg blue grounds with monkeys climbing up sticks of gilt, bronzed and silvered bamboo, one monkey scampering away from a serpent baring its tongue, the other grasping a bird by its tail-feathers, the rims moulded with a band of brown and gilt zig-zags, on four paw and key-pattern feet with ruyi lappet terminals, the moulded details painted in brown, white and gilding (slight wear to gilding, one foot chipped at back, one with minute chip to rim, some restoration to feet), one vase with incised JC mongram, purple printed marks, one with white pad mark, date codes for 1874
