Frederick William of Brandenburg "The Great Elector" (1620-1688), son of George William and Elizabeth Charlotte of the Palantine; married Louisa Henrietta of Orange-Nassau in 1646 and secondly, Dorothea of Holstein-Glücksburg in 1668. His eldest son Friedrich I, by his first wife assumed the title of King of Prussia.
This enamel is after the portrait by Jacob Vaillant, circa 1670, versions of which are housed in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Brunswick and in the Olstyn Museum, Poland, formerly in the Dohna Collection at Sclobitten Castle. Another enamel of the sitter attributed to the Huaud brothers is in the collection of the House of Orange-Nassau, inv.no.m.80 (K. Schaffers-Bodenhausen, The Portrait Miniatures in the Collections of the House of Orange-Nassau, 1993, p. 265, ill. no. 296)
