AN IMPRESSIVE KINJI GROUND LACQUER MODEL of a caparisoned elephant supporting an elaborate ivory shibayama tusk vase, the elephant bejewelled in various coloured inlays, the head-dress, strapwork and saddlecloth in silver and inlaid in various vivid cloisonne enamels depicting ho-o birds, flowers and foliage, the cloth to the other side in iroe hiramakie depicting various brocade and geometric designs, surrounded by a large inlaid cloisonne panel of ho-o birds among flowers and foliage, signed Kaneko sei; the tusk vase inlaid in Shibayama style with scenes of a courtier and a bijin playing the flute standing under a tree, the other side with a hawk on rockwork by a jardiniere of flowers, set into a gold lacquer base, the rim in silver and cloisonne filigree with a band of lappetts, signed (some inlays missing to the tusk vase and minor damage to the lacquer), Meiji period (1868-1912), with an accompanying fitted black lacquer stand with silver fittings and brocade cover, signed Kaneko sei, and brocade bag for elephant and tusk vase approx. 76.5cm.high
