Lot Essay

The card-table, with Palladian eared-tablet top, is supported on serpentined legs whose Jupiter's Eagle-claw feet, enriched with the husk-festooned scallop-shell badge of Venus, correspond to those of parlour chairs supplied about 1733 for Houghton Hall, Norfolk (see: J. Cornforth, 'Houghton Hall', Country Life, 7 May 1987, p. 108, fig. 10
A cabinet of related Grecian form, with roundel-capped pilasters derived from an antique seat illustrated by C. H. Tatham in Ancient Ornament Architecture Drawn from Originals in Rome, 1799, pl. 46 and attributed to George Bullock (d. 1818), was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 14 April 1988, lot 80
