Lot Essay

This lady's work-table with carrying-handle for the removable book-tray follows the design of a 'sheveret' that appears in Gillows estimate-sketch book for 5 July 1790. A stamped cheveret following this design was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 17 November 1988, lot 158. The distinctive leaf-inlay on the legs corresponds to a side table that was probably made for William Tufnell of Langleys, Essex, probably by the cabinet-maker Charles Elliott. Little is known about Elliott's actual furniture-making but he may have been responsible for a high quality group of marquetry-inlaid satinwood furniture.
