This view of Chiswick is a version of one of the scenes from a set of eight views of the house and gardens by Rysbrack, of which at least two sets are known. The full set of eight is illustrated in J. Harris, The Artist and The Country House, London, 1979, pp. 182-183, figs. 187, a-h. This set was formerly at Oxburgh Hall, Norfolk. Five of the views, including this one, are in the Devonshire Collection at Chatsworth. Harris, loc.cit., dates the views between 1729 and 1731.

The garden at Chiswick including the Patte D'oie was almost certainly designed by Charles Bridgeman (circa 1680-1738) although the scheme was probably subsequently revised by William Kent (see: C. Hussey, English Gardens and Landscape, 1700-1750, London, 1967, pp.37 and 46, fig. 23)
