The grounds of the Berliner Verein für Luftfahrt were frequently used for experimental flights. In 1883 the Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin flew an unmotorized bi-plane and in 1908 the Wright brothers completed their first motorized flight, lasting 19 minutes. Today, the area is the Tempelhof airport.
