Lot Essay

James Delance, was born in Downton, Wilts on 7 February, 1655 and became a Brother of the Clockmakers' Company in 1678. It is presumed that he spent approximately five years in London and then set up at a shop in Cheap Street, Frome producing mainly lantern clocks most of which were signed Delaunce. He subsequently returned to Downton in Wilts where a number of longcase clocks have been recorded with that signature mostly with posted frame movements
