THE ADORATION OF THE MAGI. Large historiated initial 'H', on part of a leaf from an ILLUMINATED CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM.
[Bologna, Maestro del 1328, first quarter of the 14th century]
Initial 123 x 110mm, leaf 413 x 390mm. The Virgin seated holding the Child, the three Kings presenting their gifts. Against a pink ground with white tracery, initial green and red on blue ground, with foliate extensions. Surrounded by text and 5 lines of music in square notation on 4 staves. 6 lines of music on verso. The text is Hodie in Jordane, the Responsory for Epiphany.
This Bolognese miniaturist, named from his illumination in the Matricola dei merciai in the Museo Civico, Bologna, MS 633 dated 1328. He illuminated some of the choirbooks in the Church of San Domenico in Bologna and is also known as 'Quarto Maestro di S. Domenico'. Cf. A. Conti, La miniatura bolognese 1270-1340 (Bologna 1981) pp. 81-85 and illustrations 214 and 215. The present miniature is probably ten years earlier than the Matricola.
