SAINT WALPURGA. Single leaf with miniature, cut from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
[Lower Rhine, perhaps Cologne?, second quarter of the 15th century.]
240 x 176mm. The Saint in blue robe and ermine cloak, holding in her right hand a book and in her left the abbess' crozier. Standing on green grass with red background patterned in gold. At her right foot a shield with the arms of England (gu. 3 lions passant or). Full border of red flowers and gold ivy leaves on hairline stems.
The text, a suffrage to Saint Walpurga in Low German, begins two lines below the portrait and continues on the verso. Ruled for 18 lines, justification 150 x 95mm, written in brown ink in an upright textura.
This is a very striking portrait. Apparently a leaf from a large Book of Hours or Prayer Book. Walpurga is particularly revered in Cologne. She was born in England, but became abbess at Heidenheim, Bavaria.
