2° (280 x 175mm). 150 leaves. Greek and roman type. Aldine woodcut anchor device on title and verso of last leaf. Early-19th-century English diced russia gilt (upper joint nearty repaired). Provenance: Sir Richard Colt Hoare (his crest on spine, Stourhead sale 1883, lot 164); W.R. Jeudwine (bookplate, sold Bloomsbury Book Auctions 18 September 1984, lot 30).
FIRST ALDINE EDITION. In addition to the Fables of Aesop and Gabrias, this edition contains texts of Phurnutus, Palaephatus, Heraclides Ponticus on allegories in Homer, Horapollo Hieroglyphica, Tarrhaeus and Didymus' proverbs, and Apologus Aesopi de Cassita apud Gellium. Renouard pp. 49-50; Brunet I, 83 'Belle edition, très-recherchée, et dont les exemplaires bien conserveés ne se trouvent pas facilement'.
