SAN PEDRO, Diego de. Carcel de amor compuesto ... a pedimento del señor don Diego Hernandez alcayde de los donceles y de otros cavalleros cortesanos. Nuevamente historiados y bien corregido. [Con otro tradillo añadido por Nicolas Nuñez]. Saragossa: Jorge Coci, 1523.
8° (143 x 90mm). Collation: A-M4. Gothic type. Large woodcut title illustration and 22 smaller text illustrations. 19th-century red morocco, inner dentelles, by Hardy, edges gilt. Provenance: Adrian Lachenal's bookplate and presentation inscription to him on behalf of the Spanish government dated May 1940.
One of the most popular sentimental novels of the Spanish Renaissance, in the manner of Goethe's Werther. First published in 1492, this is probably the eighth edition. It contains also the continuation by Nicolas Nuñez. All early editions are extremely rare. This is probably the copy mentioned by Palau as having been sold in 1922 for 900 pts. Salva believed that this edition might have been printed in Venice, as the type and woodcuts are the same as in the Venice 1531 edition. Brunet V, 110; Palau 293349.
