CHURCHILL, Sir Winston (1874-1965). Typewritten letter signed, addressed in autograph to 'My dear Young' (Major Sir Hubert Young), Chartwell, 10 September 1937, acknowledging a letter about a possible invitation to speak in Cambridge, recalling with pleasure their former association, and commenting 'I do not believe this partition scheme for Palestine will work. It would be much better to persevere along the old lines. However we are oppressed by so many large burdens and dangers that I could wish we had only Palestine and its troubles on our hands', one page, 4°.
Sir Hubert Winthrop Young (1885-1950), a distinguished colonial administrator, had served in the Colonial Office in London while Churchill was Secretary for the Colonies in 1921/22. The 'partition scheme' to which the letter refers was recommended by the Peel Commission in 1937 as the only possible solution to the dilemma posed by the vast increase in Jewish immigration into Palestine, which had prompted the Arab Revolt the previous year. Approval for the scheme was rescinded in 1938, under pressure from both sides.
