The German pocket battle-ship, the Graf Spee, which had caused severe losses to British merchant shipping, was finally cornered by British cruisers and blew herself up outside Montevideo harbour in December 1939, en event which caused jubilation in London and was celebrated in a Trinidadian Calypso which Young, then Governor of Trinidad, had sent to Churchill.
