12° in sixes (118 x 72mm). Printed on paper manufactured from the Marsh mallow (Althaea officinalis). 20 paper samples manufactured from various plants inserted at the end. (Some worming to 11 of the samples and to the lower blank margin of 10 text leaves.) Contemporary French green morocco gilt, g.e. (slight damage to head and foot of spine).
A FINE COPY of an interesting curiosity. The British Library copy was printed on paper made from the bark of the Lime tree, with bound samples and the addition of a preface by A. P. Leonier Delisle. The recto of each sample is printed with a rule border enclosing a letterpress identification of the material employed: these include Nettles; Hops; Moss; Reeds; Algae (x 3); Couch-grass roots; Euonymous wood; Hazel wood; Elm bark; Lime bark; Water willow bark; Goat willow bark; Weeping willow bark; Poplar bark; Oak bark; Burdock leaves; a combination of Burdock and 'Pas-d'ane' leaves; Thistle leaves.
