Miró abandoned oil paintings during 1942 in favour of the more spontaneous qualities inherent in the watercolour medium. He executed a series of watercolours of Personnages or Oiseaux in the autumn of 1942 which, like the present work, are notable for the vibrancy of colour and facility of execution.
