Of square section, the upper half intricately carved in high relief with a large full-faced dragon at the top and eight smaller dragons around the sides, all among cloud scrolls, the seal carved with the characters Taishang Huangdi zhi Bao, age cracks

Lot Essay

Compare the square ivory seal with the same inscription as the present lot in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, exhibited Chinese Ivories from the Shang to the Qing, British Museum, London jointly with the O.C.S., 1984, Catalogue, no.234, p.174, also exhibited Arts of the Qing Dynasty, O.C.S., 1963-64, Transactions, vol.35, no.445, and illustrated by R. S. Jenyns and W. Watson, Chinese Art: the Minor Arts II, p.198. An imperial seal dated to the Qianlong period, from the Ralph C. Lee Collection, was sold in our Hong Kong Rooms, 19 January 1988, lot 527.
