Lot Essay

Paul Fechter (1880-1958) was an art and literary critic who published the catalogue of Pechstein's prints in 1921. He probably knew Pechstein in the early years of the Brücke in Dresden where Fechter was an art critic for the newspaper Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten. When Fechter moved to Berlin in 1911, his contact with the Brücke artists increased and his close friendship with Pechstein was formed. The friendship certainly contributed to Fechter's decision in 1914 to publish the first book devoted to Expressionism (Paul Fechter, Der Expressionmus, Munich, 1914)
