A RARE MING CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER RECTANGULAR BOX, LINER AND COVER
jiajing six-character mark incised and gilt under the base and of the period
The deep crimson lacquer carved in relief on each of the four sides and at the top with a quatrefoil panel enclosing several cranes perched on a pine tree below another crane in flight among clouds beside a wispy streak of smoke representing a shou character, all reserved on a ground of four leafy sprays with flowerheads including chrysanthemum, lotus and peony, all above a narrow band of waves and prunus blossom at the broader base, the cover with a band of floral scroll with Buddhist Emblems, the box interior and the liner lacquered in black, minor losses to lacquer surface

Lot Essay

Compare the smaller cabinet, opening at the front and containing small drawers, without a Jiajing mark but attributed to the early Jiajing period exhibited, 2000 Years of Chinese Lacquer, O.C.S. of Hong Kong jointly with the Art Gallery, Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1993, Catalogue no.54. A pair of cabinets, also front opening and with drawers, formerly in the collection of H.R.H. Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester, were exhibited The Arts of the Ming Dynasty, O.C.S. 1957, Catalogue nos.257 and 258, and sold in these Rooms, 8 June 1987, lot 141.
