Lot Essay

The carving of the present relief and the pitted surface of the background are both related to the works of Francis Van Bossuit. Furthermore, the pose of the reclining figure of Bacchus is strikingly similar to that of the victorious David in one of the series of engravings after Bossuit's work by Mattys Pool (Tardy, loc. cit.).
