Lot Essay

Large bronze ewers of this sort are rare, although two comparable examples survive from the late fourteenth century, one in the Victoria and Albert Museum (no. 217-1879;) and another in the British Museum (MLA 96. 7-27, 1). Both were exhibited in the Age of Chivalry (loc. cit.). Williamson notes that such pieces were probably made by bell-founders.
