Lot Essay

Pricket candlesticks in the form of knights on horseback and fantastical beasts were common throughout the twelfth and thirteenth centuries (Falke & Meyer, loc. cit.). However, figural and animal candlesticks with long stems terminating in open sockets became increasingly popular in the later middle ages, and were a particular speciality of Dinant.

A nearly identical candlestick was sold as lot 201 of the sale of the Robert von Hirsch Collection, Sotheby's, 22 June 1978.
