Lot Essay

Johann Andreas Thelott (1655-1734) was from a distinguished family of Augsburg engravers and silversmiths of the same name, who flourished in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Stylistically, the present relief is closely related to other known works by Thelott (see especially Seling, op. cit., II, fig. 625), although the inclusion of the rocaille decoration evident here would place it at the very end of the master's life, or shortly after his death.
