Lot Essay

From 1807 onwards, busts of Napoleon after the celebrated models by Canova and Chaudet were produced in Carrara and sold in Elisa's shop in Paris at 9 Boulevard des Italiens. Interestingly, Chaudet's bust was regarded as a better likeness than Canova's, and was much in demand (Hubert, loc. cit.). It seems reasonable to suppose that the Canova inscription on the present example represents a lapsus on the part of the copyist.
