Lot Essay

The present bronze must date from the end of the sixteenth century or the beginning of the seventeenth. Its style suggests that it was produced in Venice, probably by an artist close to the Veronese sculptor Girolamo Campagna. However, it is not simply an adaptation of Girolamo's celebrated Venus Marina, but rather an independent variation on the theme of the female nude. The figure presumably represents a goddess or allegorical personification, but now lacks any identifying attributes.
