Lot Essay

The present inkwell is closely related to another tripartite example in the Abbott Guggenheim Collection (Camins, loc. cit.). There are numerous differences of detail, but the putti surmounting the lids are almost identical. The eccentric placement of the hands of the Abbott Guggenheim putto is explained by the inclusion here of a swathe of drapery.
