Lot Essay

The facial type of the present putto suggests the world of François Duquesnoy, who was known as 'il maestro dei putti' on account of his fondness for this type of subject-matter. The iconography of the bronze is less straightforward, since an infant with a serpent would usually represent Hercules, while the inclusion of a skull implies an element of memento mori. No other cast of the present model has been identified.
