Lot Essay

There are a number of related bronze statuettes of this subject, generally associated with the circle of Giambologna. They include one formally in the Rhò Collection in Vienna (Avery and Radcliffe, oc. cit.), a second formerly in the Beit Collection (Bode, loc. cit.), and a third sold in these Rooms on 18 April 1989, as lot 133. This latter was tentatively attributed to Antonio Susini, and it is by analogy with it that the present bronze has been linked with his name.
