A RARE PAIR OF FAMILLE VERTE MUSICIANS
18th/early 19th century
Each modelled standing on a canted rectangular pedestal enamelled on the biscuit in Kangxi style with lotus scrolls, the lady playing the Chinese lute, pipa, and wearing a black-ground robe with delicate chrysanthemum-scroll borders over a seeded yellow-ground inner garment, her hair neatly coiled and with two plaits falling over her shoulders, the gentleman strumming a zither, qin, and dressed in an aubergine-ground outer robe with clouds over a green-ground inner garment, both with some restoration

Lot Essay

Compare the pair of very similar famille verte figures on identical bases, originally from the Jakob Goldschmidt Collection and included in the Berlin 1929 Chinese Exhibition as no.958, sold in these Rooms, 9 May 1994, lot 5, when they were dated to the Kangxi period.
