Lot Essay
Jewellery incorporating carved gems of berries, fruit and flowers reflected the fashion in the '20's and '30's for jewellery with an oriental flavour. This fashion drew its inspiration largely from the fabrics imported by Liberty from India and the patronage of the maharajahs of India to the jewellers in Europe.
Jewellers such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Boucheron were eager to produce jewellery to satisfy the demands of this wealthy clientele. Whilst pieces in this style by Cartier are not uncommon on the market, examples by Van Cleef & Arpels are much rarer.
