A NEO-CLASSICAL ORMOLU, BRONZE AND PORPHYRY URN CLOCK of ovoid form with dual enamel circlets and hour and half-hour striking movement with platform escapement of the shell, seaweed and rockwork finial flanked by twin addorsed mermaid handles, each holding fruiting sprays, above a spreading base with a band of ribbed foliage and concave-chamfered plinth edged with foliate moulding, the stepped moulded base with Cupid holding his bow and pointing with his arrow 19th Century, inscribed 1917

Lot Essay

This clock, emblematical of Leda's egg, is related to a number of figurative vase clocks upon plinth bases flanked by Cupid, discussed by G. de Bellaigue with reference to the neo-classical Cupid clock and calendar at Waddesdon Manor, (see G. de Bellaigue, The James A. de Rothschild Collection, Furniture, Clocks and Gilt Bronzes, National Trust, 1974, vol. 1, no. 20.)
