Lot Essay

The bronze caryatid Cupid, emerging from an acanthus-wrapped bracket and supporting a basket with a flaming candelabrum surrounded by cornucopia-scrolled candlebranches, is designed in the antique manner popularised by C. Percier and P. Fontaine's, Receuil de Decorations-Interieures, 1801. Its pattern relates to wall-lights supplied by Messrs. Thomire-Duterme et Cie. to Fontainebleau in 1809 (see J-P. Samoyault, Pendules et bronzes d'ameublement, Fontainebleau Catalogue Paris 1989, no. 12.)
