Lot Essay

The fluted and hermed pedestal shaft is capped by a heroic trophy incorporating a Roman helmet, escutcheon-shield together with fasces-rods and Hercules' club, and its palm-wrapped stem is festooned with a triumphal nike-mask hung from tasselled and knotted drapery.

Designed in the Goût Grec style with their husk-garlanded branches, these wall-lights are related to a pair signed by Philippe Caffieri and illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Proschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich 1986, fig. 3.10.4.1-4, while the triumphant martial-trophy-capped backplate is shared by a further pair illustrated in H. Ottomeyer and P. Proschel, op. cit. fig.3.2.4
