Francois-Honoré-Georges Jacob and Georges Jacob, dit Jacob Desmalter flourished 1803-13
Recalling Ovid's Metamorphoses, concerning the 'Loves of the Gods', Marie Antoinette's boudoir chimney-piece and furniture at Fontainebleau were embellished in the early 1780s with poetic trophies comprising Cupid's weapons and 'quiver' supports. The latter also featured on her boudoir chairs at Versailles. A corresponding armchair bearing the stamp of Georges Jacob (maître en 1765) is illustrated by F.J.B. Watson, Louis XVI Furniture, London 1960 fig. 165
This stool's flowered-ribbon guilloche and tablets also relate closely to that of armchairs by Jacob supplied in the 1780s to George, Prince of Wales, later King George IV. (op.cit. fig. 167), so it is possible that it was commissioned from Messrs. Jacob Desmalter to augment a suite that had previously been supplied by their father, as happened with the theatre chairs at Versailles (sold Christie's New York), 1 November 1989, lot 169).
