Lot Essay

Perhaps the 'Hand Candlestick Dresden china with ormolu handle and china flowers' recorded by comtesse de Flahaut in her bedroom at Coventry House in her 1863 list.

The saucer dish was presumably originally part of a cabaret, the rest of which must have been broken and so it was used to replace an earlier, possibly lacquer, base on this candlestick

This type of candlestick was designed to be suspended from a hook, hung over a standing screen or placed on a table.

A similar example from the collection of the late René Fribourg was sold Sotheby's London, VII, Part 2. 17-18 October 1963, lot 744
