Lot Essay

This ormolu-enriched commode with lozenge-framed paterae and bacchic-lion feet relates to a pattern for a commode antique, published by La Mésangère in his, Meubles et Objects de Goût, 1802, pl. 49; reflacting the early 19th Century antique manner popularised by C. Percier and P. Fontaine's, Receuil de decorations interieures, 1801.

These features, together with the nymph-herm pilasters and lion-masks handles, appear in a closely related commode pattern of 1804 plublished by F.G. Bertuch and G.M. Kraus, Journal des Luxus und der Moden, Weimar, (1786-1827) no. 2; 6.
