Lot Essay

Its commode/cabinet type and serpentiend and voluted forms with canted and pilastered angles relates to masterpiece patterns presented by Mainz cabinet-makers in the 1740's; However, the chequered borders to the trellis-veneered drawers and thier ribbon-bow excutcheons demonstrate the antique tast of the 1770's (see H. Kreisel, Die Kunst des deutschen Möbels, Munich 1970, vol. 2, fig. 1032.
