Lot Essay

The present bust is another version of an identical half-length, in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore (Marquand, op. cit., p. 167, no. 70). Both works are closely related to a less accomplished treatment of a half-length Madonna - with Child - between two supplicatory angels, also in the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore (Marquand, op. cit., p. 167, no. 69).
